Cable testing options comparison: HIPOT (e.g. VLF, Power Frequency), General Condition Assessment (e.g. Tangent Delta, Power Factor, Dielectric Spectroscopy), and Partial Discharge (on-line PD, off-line PD) The intention of this application note is to compare in an objective way the 3 major categories of cable tests: high potential withstand, general condition assessment, and partial discharge (PD), so that engineers can quickly determine the test method best suited for their application and to compare all the tests to the IMCORP diagnostic test (PD and Tangent Delta). Each of the three categories is discussed in light of recently published IEEE standard recommendations and IMCORP field experience. Although these tests cannot be readily compared, some distinctions can be made on the basis of practical field application...
